Basic Combatives Course (BCC) Level 1 Practice Test

Focusing your head and eyes in the right way keeps you stable, alert, and protected. When your head stays aligned over your spine and your gaze is on the threat, your center of gravity stays over your feet, so you can move, pivot, and react without getting knocked off balance. Looking at the opponent lets you pick up their cues and changes in posture sooner, which speeds up your reaction time so you can block, sidestep, or create distance more quickly. Keeping your eyes on the attacker also helps guard your vulnerable targets—your face and head—by letting you maintain a ready guard and respond to incoming moves. So this combination—balanced stance, quicker responses, and better protection of exposed areas—is why head and eyes positioning is important in self-defense.
